Urban Planning
Third year
2018
The project is located in Haifa's Hadar Hacarmel neighborhood. This area is characterized by significant topographical differences and many empty areas, some of which are abandoned or neglected. The block I chose to develop includes the Haifa Museum of Art - a building declared for preservation. The building is very beautiful and has been used as a school. In addition to the museum, there is also an Arab Jewish center and residential buildings with 3-4 floors. I identified the block as having great potential because the museum itself has a very significant structure and I felt that it did not receive the urban space it deserved. I also felt that it was possible to create in it a space that combines culture, education, housing and commercial space in order to produce better urbanism.
Haifa is characterized by a Jewish and Arab population and a broad student population. However, there is a disconnection in Haifa between the students and the city itself. The aim of the project was to create an "urban campus" and integrate it together with residential and cultural buildings already existing in Haifa such as the Museum and the Jewish-Arab Center. The plans I have developed are actually building additions that connect to the old buildings and create an extension for other uses. For example, the museum will expand into a university building and will cause students to become an inseparable part of the museum and the surrounding area.
In addition, I wanted to create a place that will be used for activity at night, so the commerial area is located on the street level and has direct access to it in order to create an area suitable for the activity of restaurants, bars, etc.
In fact, I decided to create a new space for the museum and integrate in the void that characterized the block, new and different spaces, which will be used for different purposes and yet will work together as a whole.
Working on the block, I tried to divide one open area into several delimited areas. The various open areas in the block are surrounded by different structures, flooring / grass, trees and levels. The goal of delimiting the areas in different ways was to try to find the proper balance between the private and public areas. There are 3 different levels within the block - a commercial area located on the street level that can be reached directly from the main street Sderot HaTzionut, the museum and university area which is located on a higher level, and the residential yard between the street level and the museum and university level.
